The Benefits of Traditional Braces

One of the greatest benefits of traditional braces treatment is that it is a tried-and-true method of orthodontic treatment that works for patients of all ages. They are an excellent choice to straighten teeth and offer numerous other benefits including:

They are always working to straighten your smile, so your treatment will never be interrupted or delayed.

When your teeth are properly aligned, they are easier to clean. Braces can help reduce the risk of cavities, gum disease and other oral health issues associated with crowded or misaligned teeth.

They are designed to correct a wide range of bite issues such as extra space, crowding, over-rotated teeth, overbites, underbites and crossbites. Additionally, braces can fix jaw alignment problems that can affect your bite. This appliance is also able to move molars, which may be required for your unique orthodontic needs.

One of the most obvious benefits of braces is the improvement in the appearance of the teeth and smile. Braces can help align crooked or misaligned teeth, enhancing the overall facial aesthetics.

How Do Traditional Braces Work?

Wire braces utilize gentle, consistent pressure to move your teeth into the proper position. You may notice some soreness for a few days after getting braces or after a wire change, but your teeth should quickly adjust to these changes. Though each orthodontic case is different, most patients can expect to wear their braces for 2 to 2.5 years.

What Are My Braces Made Of?

Braces are comprised of several key components that work together to shift the teeth. These parts include:

Metal rings that are cemented to the back molars to anchor the archwires.

Low-profile, stainless steel squares that are attached to the outside of each tooth. Brackets hold the archwire in place so that the teeth will receive a constant force to move them into position.

The wire that connects all of the brackets together and provides the source of tension that will move the teeth. Archwires will usually be changed at each orthodontic appointment.

Small, rubber rings that secure the archwire to each bracket. Ties come in many colors, which can be changed at each orthodontic appointment, giving young patients a chance to personalize their braces and help make treatment fun!

Caring For Your Braces

Unfortunately, wires do sometimes break. In order to prevent harming your traditional braces, patients should avoid sticky, crunchy or hard foods. If your braces break or if something comes loose, make an appointment to visit us as soon as possible. If the wire is poking you and causing discomfort, use wax to create a barrier between the wire and your cheek, gum or tongue. Wax is a temporary solution, and our team will help fix it as soon as you can get to our office!

Cleaning Your Teeth With Braces

Braces require diligent oral hygiene practices in order to keep them clean. We recommend carefully brushing twice a day and flossing every day, which will have a positive impact on your final results. Brushing after eating or snacking can also help to remove food particles which can contribute to plaque buildup or even decay. Consider using an electric toothbrush, which can help you work more efficiently. Flossing takes more time with traditional braces, but you can purchase flossers that are designed to fit under the archwire so you don’t have to thread your floss! Traditional wire braces could be your solution to a brighter, straighter and overall healthier smile.
